i know there's alot of factors here but just a very rough idea is all i need. i want to get some beef cattle next year. i haven't decided yet if i'm just going to feed for the summer or year round or have breeding stock yet. i do about 30 acres of grass hay, will have 3 acres of alfalfa next year and 5 acres of pasture. how many cattle can i support/or how much hay does it take per cow per year? once again just trying to get a ballpark idea so i know if i need to round up more hay ground and pasture. i was thinking about ten head or so.

A 4X5 round bale feeds about 30 cows for a day or one cow for 30 days or 2 for 15 da or 10 for 3 da. Lots of variables like complete snow cover; temperature-they need more food to maintain when it is 5 below zero than when 30 degrees, etc. Depends on your location- in s.w. Pa an acre of normal grass hay will yield about 4 first cutting 4X5 thousand to 12 hundred pound round bales and about 2 second cutting bales per acre. Usually another third cutting or better per acre.

I send 500 lb steers to the Flint Hills for 120 days and always figure 3 1/2 acres per head. It all depends on what type of grass you have. I also pasture 500 lb steers in an intensive managed padock system and put about 40 head on 35 acres. Another system that I have is a rotational grazing of 30 acres and I put 15 head on that one.

Your grass type (tame, native, legume, etc.)and moisture (rain) will dictate what you can do. Also wheather you intend to grain them in addition to grazing them.

Check out what the locals in your area are doing and don't try to reinvent the wheel right off the bat. Get your feet wet following along what they are doing.

GOOD LUCK & HAVE FUN

I have 4 brood cows in about 7 acres of pasture. With them and the calves that is not enough pasture. I let them out into other lots for them to get enough feed and to keep me from having to mow the yard. I generally feed them about 2/3 of a square bale each and some ground corn feed in the winter months. That's what I do if that helps.

"a dry cow will eat around 25 ponds of hay per day"

She won't be dry after eating that many ponds. I suppose a wet cow will want desert? :^)

Forgot to say a 4X5 round bale is about 34 squares. That will vary for different makes of balers-but a good ball-park.
