Hi I have posted on here and several have helped with other problems. I overhauled my H this winter and now it wont start worth a darn. Runs great when it does and has power as I plowed with it today, but cranks and cranks forever. I had it to where it was running decent, but then it died on me whn going down the road. Ended up being spark plugs, put old plugs in and it started off. So I took it to a show today and it cranked for a while then fired and ran good this morning. Shut it off to go get a plow part and came back and it wouldnt start. Put brand new plugs in and it cranked a little and started and ran good, then started hard but started after I hauled it home. My buddies tractor you hit the starter button it turns over twice and is running. Mine cranks and cranks and you have to play with choke till it fires and hope it stays running. Why would it not want to start/ ruin plugs? we put it at dead center and set timing then adjusted it to where it ran good. Is there a way you can use a timing light? I dont really believe timing is issue because it runs best where we have it set. What is proper clearance and way to set tappets/ check valves? Thanks for help and sorry for long post.
Matt

Likely one of two things: #1 -Coil is bad/weak or #2 Plug gap is off. ---Jeff

Hi my tractor was running on 12 volt last year, then i overhauled it and put it back to 6 volt, could the 12 volt coil I put on not be working as it should with the 6 volt system? What is difference between 6 and 12 volt coils? I put gap at 25 is that correct?

Check your plug gap, especially if you have 12V. Try to open them up to .032, see if it starts easier. ChadS

Had the same problem. Mine was the coil. Wasn't producing enough spark to start. Once started ran great. Pull your coil wire off spark should jump out of wire about 1/4 of an inch. Hope this helps.

I think I'd time it to specs and continue from there. There's a procedure for doing that in the owner's manual or you can find other posts that tell you how in the archives. I'd check the point gap with a dwell meter - 60 degrees dwell for battery ignition on a 4-cylinder engine. As a follow-up on the arcing notes in another post, try looking at your wires/ignition system in a moonless dark night and see if you can see any arcing (tiny blue-white lightning bolts) happening between the wires or around the cap. Just a few ideas. Let us know what the cure finally turns out to be.

With hard starting, I have almost always found it to be in the ignition. My 450 gave me fits for almost a year. I changed the coil, points, condenser, rotor, wires and plugs. The cap looked good as new, but I saw it arc on the outside once. I changed the cap and all was well. My guess is ignition.
