IH 6 pop

Got a call from my brother down in Florida yesterday who had just bought a new Jeep Grand Cherokee equipped with a 6 cylinder.

He was a little surprised to find that old IH 258 6 cylinder in it. The same engine we used to have in an old ’59 farm truck. :>)

But they were tough as nails, and as the government emission requirements became stricter in the late '60's and early '70's, IHC realized they could BUY the engine from AMC a lot cheaper than they could make their own line of sixes emission-compliant. As an IH truck fan AND a former AMC/Jeep parts person, I used to chuckle when I'd see Gremlins and Pacers with engine parts with "IHC" casting marks on manifolds and such (part of the deal...IH did some of the foundry work...that way, less cash changed hands).

The primary difference between the IH version and the AMC version was that IHC used Holley carbs, while AMC stuck with Carters.

If you were an AMC parts man, then you know full-well that they have never, ever used anything of their own design, just their own part #'s; GM & Chrysler trannys, Delco electronics, many Ford starters and IH engines. This method goes clear back to the old Rambler days.

Pull a turn signal switch out of any AMC product....pure and simple GM stuff.

No, it is AMC who is doing the cloning. Always has been. Just because they changed the valve cover(s) doesn't mean they they have a totally new engine.
