I was wondering what else anyone has tried to put in an 06-56 series tractor besides a 414-466. Did Kinze put Detroits in these tractors? If so, was it a 671 or what? Anyone know of any examples? I was told by Dad that a mechanic in Des Moines put a V-8, at the customer's request, in a 1456. When he was done, IH came out and took pictures of it, and it then became one of the forerunners of the 1468.

A Brand X engine conversion in a gas tractor MAY be ok, but a diesel should be rebuilt. Years down the road when you need parts for the conversion, where do you get them? They won't be listed in ANY IH parts books?? Think about THAT!

Bermuda Ken: I suppose it wouldn't be any different than getting parts for old trucks. Most of them have various engine/trans combinations. Engine parts would come from the manufacturer, tractor parts from CIH. If it was something you had to manufacture, keep the company's number.

I've heard of 5.9 Cummins being put in 06-56 series tractors. I guess that would be alright if you were going to repower a gas tractor. The IH diesels in those tractors are about the toughest engines around, I can't see why anyone would switch to another brand.

Like K.B. said, 5.9 Cummins can go into IH tractors in that era. I have personally worked on an 806 and an 856 5.9 Cummins engined, and about my only complaint is the trottle operation is horrible. We own an Oliver 1755 with the 5.9 conversion, and it works great in all aspects. Great power in all tractors though.

K.B. I agree with you about those engines. I was just curious on what anyone else has tried to do with that series.
