I just purchased a 1980 model International 384 diesel tractor. Before I go out and do any work with it, I want to change the engine oil and filter. First, what oil viscosity is recommended for my tractor? Second, what brand of oil should I use? I was thinking of using Delo or Rotella.....any recommendations? Is it worth the difference in price to use the Case-IH brand oil from my dealer? I do not have the origianl owners manual, so I have no idea what was recommended for my tractor when is was made. Third, what type of oil filter should I use? Are there any other brands available to fit my tractor other that what my Case-IH dealer sells? Thanks for any help in this matter.

Hi, used Rotella 10W30 in all are IH Diesels for many years. Always buy filters from Case-IH. False economy by saving a few cents on cheaper filters.

My 2 cents

The proper oil choice depends on what you plan on doing with the tractor.

First of all consult the owners manual!!!
(If you don't have one, you can easily order a new copy from your dealer.)

Most likely it will recommend a straight grade of oil for normal service.
#30 for summer use and #10 for winter use.

At the time your engine was built multiweight diesel engine oils were not widely used, therefore the engine was not designed for them.

However if the tractor is used only in light duty interminent service multiweight oils can be used, be aware that oil consumption will be higher.

As far as filters is concerned, any name brand filter (wix, hastings, fleetguard, etc) is satisfactory.
The CNH labeled filters on the dealer's shelf are produced under contract by various manufactors.
In fact most dealers shelfs now have a fair amount of fleetguard filters on them in addition to the OEM labeled units.

It probably wouldn't be a bad idea to change all your tractor's fluids and filters now.
Doing so would give you a excellent opertunity to become more familiar with your tractor as well as preventative maintence.

I would take exception to Doc Holiday, not because he is wrong but simply because opinions vary. My take is you can run straight weight or multi-vis with similar results and with some possible benefits to multi-vis if you live in a seasonal climate with with both very warm and very cold weather. If your motor is in very good condition you could run a 10W-30 all year around
or even a 10W-40. If you like to change oil seasonally try a 5W-30 in winter and 10W-40 in summer. If the motor is a little loose you can run a 15W-40 all year around or switch to 20W-50 in summer. If the motor is real loose you might do better with straight weight oils appropriate for the season.
