1. My cub starts easily with the hand crank but almost never when I pull the starting lever. It has a coil (not mag. What would cause this?

2. I recently installed a brand new clutch including throw out bearing. I was told not to adjust the fingers, however, the clutch grinds and I have very little adjustment. Any help on this would be appreciated.

That cub should crank like gang busters if you do all that bigdog says and have a good bat. If it still doesn't crank good have the starter re-built at a shop where some old timer knows what he's doing. Problems in the starter can draw too much current starving the coil so she won't start.

Check and clean your battery cable connections, especially if you are still running a 6 volt system. You may be getting enough voltage drop across poor connections to keep the coil from creating a good spark while the starter motor is cranking. Also make sure the heavier 6 volt cables have not been replaced with lighter guage 12 volt cables. Check your ground connections too.
The clutch fingers should be adjusted so that they are 1 1/8" to 1 1/4" from the surface of the pressure plate and be sure they are all the same height. Then adjust your clutch pedal for 1" of free play and you should be set.
