I owen a farmall 656. If I remove the muffler and put on a crome straight pipe will it hurt the tractor in any way? Or would i benefit from it in any way, such as horse power or running a little cooler? I currently use it in the field and I'm starting to get involved in tractor pulling. Any info would be great. Thanks for your help. JMAN

I'm guessing you are a young man. I work for a company that sells software to guys in the excavating business where most have spent a lot of time on equipment. Most of them have hearing aids and say "huh?" a lot. Don't do it. It's bad for your health, and generally annoys your neighbors. Plus, who wants all hose other sounds (valve clatter, rod knock, gear whine, etc.) drowned out by a straight pipe?

Take Care
Steve

Steve, Suggesting a good set of ear plugs would probably be a better solution. There's a whole lot of fun to be had pulling or working a tractor with a straight pipe. I'm sure that theres more than a few young guys smoking funny stuff and drinking beer in "quiet surroundings" that will wreck their bodies far sooner than a loud muffler. Lighten up old chap, a deaf ear may be an asset later on when his missus gets to nagging.

Don't think so -- I have difficulty hearing normal conversation. Never drove a tractor without a muffler. If I had, I probably couldn't hear ANY conversation. My deafness began when I was 12 -- wondered why my ears were numb when I went home for lunch, after driving a tractor for 5 hours. They cleared up in a few minutes. Too late, the damage was done. If he wants his tractor to make a lot of noise, he probably isn't interested in ear plugs. Need to change my handle to CN-DEAF.

It is possible to warp the valves by running a straight pipe, but the only way this would happen is if the engine was extremely hot and you shut it off without cooling it down properly. Normal use, even tractor pulling, would not get it that hot. Like the other guy said, the only thing it will hurt is your hearing.
