Anyone have any creative ideas on repairing a SH manifold with the threads for the exhaust pipe gone? The manifold is in excellent shape otherwise. I'd rather not weld it. I'm thinking about machining a thin ring with new threads, boring a larger hole in the manifold and pressing the ring in. Anyone ever try this??

I think that gene b has the best approach. You do not need "very much" or "very deep" threads since the pipe threads are tapered. Just run the pipe tape in just enough to cut "some" new threads or part of threads and then coat both the inside threads in the manifold and the external threads on the threaded "pipe" with a good "muffler/exhaust pipe compound" install and let set (dry) for a few days before running the tractor. Idle and let it warm up slow the first time. Just my opinion, but I think this is MUCH SAFER than trying to press fit a ring in the manifold. These things get HOT. Hope what ever you decide to do works good for you.

Are you sure that a pipe tap wont clean them up enough to use a new piece of pipe.

Gauger, That could probablly be done, but you would have to be careful not to crack the manifold. The other problem, is that the manifold being an awkward shape will be tough to hold while pressing the new ring in. Things to remember, not to have too much press on that sleeve so as not to collapse those internal threads! I wish you were closer, I love a challenge in the machine shop. Good luck.

I'm going to give it a try. I'm making the ring by turning and facing a cast iron pipe coupling rather than making it from scratch. It will be a light press, when the manifold is hot everything will be snug from expansion.

Gauger, Yes, heating the manifold up will help a little bit. Im not sure how much the bore will enlarge after heating, it should grow some but its only about 2 1/2", so it will be minimal. Anyway good luck! Let me know how you make out!
