I have a 140 that is leaking oil from the transmission. I believe it is coming from the front seal where the transmission meets the clutch shaft. Is there any way to get to and check/replace this seal without splitting the tractor between the clutch and tranny?

Sounds like the seal at the front of the transmission is leaking. There is a shaft seal there, as well as a cap with a gasket over the end of the countershaft and bearing. Also, dowell pins. I had a leak like this on my C and one of the dowell pins was missing and the hole was all the way through into the transmission. Also, there was no gasket on the cover over the counershaft bearing. To repair this, you will have to split the tractor just in front of the transmission. This is not a real hard job, as when you get all the external things off, support the front and the back, and when you take out the 4 bolts there, the drive shaft will slide right out of the clutch. Replace the bolts with longer ones to make it easier to support, etc. You can roll the back part back on the rear wheels. Make sure the front is well blocked and use a shop crane or something similar on the back part. Make sure the clutch remains engaged while the driveshaft is out of it. If disengaged while the shaft is out, the plate will not be aligned anymore and you won't be able to get it back together.

Have you checked for overfilling? The fill level plug is on the left side of the transmission partially hidden by the brake rod. If the tractor is stored outside, rain water can cause apparent overfilling. If it is overfull and is not from your action, I suggest draining and starting over with fresh, clean lube.

There is a hole approx. 1 inch in diameter at the bnottom rear of the clutch housing centered between the bolts attaching the clutch to the transmission. There is oil leaking from there after stopping the tractor. The transmission was empty, and after filling with 6 qt. oil, the leak appeared as soon as the tractor was moved. There was no sign of water in the oil.

John: I think what Bus Driver is refering to is are you over filling the transmission? There is a plug just below the front of the left fender, just behind brake linkage. That is the transmission oil level. The reason I say this is because transmission only holds 5 quarts.

Hugh, when I removed the fill plug next to the shifter, I could see the bottom of the transmission case, as it was virtually empty. I had noticed oil under the tractor before, but had not found where it was coming from. Before I refilled with the six qt., it had been losing oil, and was not overfull.
