I have an IH 1066 and my brother in law uses it alot more than I do. He says that he has noticed that it it starting to use oil. He says that after he has run the machine bush-hogging etc., that he checks the oil in it after lunch and finds that it is low. He says after the work is done for the day he checks it again and it needs an oil top off. He estimates that it uses about a gallon of oil a week during hard usuage. My question is this: How much oil would this tractor have to use before you think that it would need to be rebuilt?
Currently it runs fine and doesn't seem to be losing any horsepower. Also, what would you think it would cost for an overhaul? Thx, Mitch.

I can tell you that when they were new and a customer would complain about oil consumption IH would not do anything about it if it did not exceed 1 quart per hour in heavy tillage.

My father-in-Law had a 1066 that used a gallon a week from the day it was new. We never touched it and it ended up woth 10,000 hrs on it before he parted with it. I wouldn't be concerned

Mitch,

It sounds to me like your brother-in-law is being verrrrr ry careful with your tractor. Bet he is running it the same way.

If they are just putzin' around, they'll use a little; sometimes a quart a day.

Pull 'em hard and that will stop. Promise.

Allan

mitch: I don't know what you call hard work, but you haven't described any work that is more than mere play for a 1066. That is unless someone is building 25' bushogs. Try putting the 1066 to some real work and I'll bet it doesn't burn any oil.

When my 1066 was new and on light work it would burn a gallon per 12 hour day. Put it on some machine that required 150 hp and oil consumption would be close to nil.

I don't think it is anything to worry about.Ours
will use up to a quart in a 1-2 day span if you
work it hard all day long (30-wt.)oil.

 I'm no mechanic, . . . . in reply to mitch, 07-30-2004 09:01:56
but I play one at home.

Mine does the same thing. Been doing it for 9 years. Mine will puff a little black smoke when it's pulling hard, and if it idles more than 5 or 10 minutes, it'll shoot light gray smoke when you first crack the trottle off idle.

Mine probably leaks more than it burns. All in all, I may add a gallon a year, if I mostly do chore work with it. If I pull the dirt pan all day for a week, I may get another gallon out of it.

Runs great now - I ain't messing with mine.

Mitch

One gallon is no problem. You should not try to keep it on the full line as long it is above the add line it is ok. The 400 series engine will always push a little out if you try to run it full.

I'm not by any means an engine expert, but if oil consumption is the only problem, at $6.99 a gallon for Rotella at Wally World (I get this price from a post below) and at a gallon a week, I'd guess you could add oil for about twenty years before you paid for an overhaul.
