IH 574 oil leak

I have a 574 that is leaking oil at the rear of the engine. I replaced the main seal but it is still leaking. Any suggestions?

Hi, is it leaking into the bell housing and out the inspection hole in the bottom ?

My brother's 684 did this for many years and if you were working in a hilly field it would leak about a quart in a day. Two years ago we had to replace the clutch and when we took the flywheel off to have it turned, the bolts on the rear main seal were loose. Tightend the bolts and never leaked again.

My I&T shop manual for 684 has special instructions for replacing rear main seal.
From manual for 684:
Unbolt and remove seal retainer and seal assembly.
Check the position the old seal is installed in retainer.
New seal can be installed in any of three locations: 1/16th above flush with retainer(new engine original position), flush with retainer or 1/16th below flush with retainer. Location of seal in retainer will depend on condition of sealing surface on crankshaft. Use new gasket and install seal retainer with new seal. Tighten bolts to 14 ft-lbs.

I don't know if the same procedure applies to 574 or not.

are you sure its engine and not transmission?

Thanks for the information. The oil does leak out of the inspection hole after it accumulates inside. I'm sure it's coming from the engine. It is black and the oil level goes down quickly.I was told by a mechanic that the seal could be put on in different positions to miss a groove worn on the crankshaft but he didn't know the specifics. He mentioned that they had a guage they used. Thanks again.
