MY 1940 FARMALL M STARTS GREAT WHEN ITS COLD,BUT
ONCE IT IS AT NORMAL OPERATING TEMP IT WILL NOT
START.IT HAS BEEN CONVERTED TO 12V BUT THERE IS A CERAMIC 6V REDUCER TO THE COIL. IT STILL HAS THE ORIGINAL COIL AND DIST. I HAVE NOTICED CONDENSATION ON THE MANIFOLD WHERE THE CARB MOUNTS TO IT. COULD IT BE VAPOR LOCKED???
I AM ALSO WONDERING IF IT IS POSSIBLE TO ADD
POWER STEERING TO THIS TRACTOR??? THANK YOU.

The resistor is getting too hot. I have an MTA that used to do the same thing if you where in the field all day. Put an internal resistor 12 volt coil on. That should do it.

Vapor lock can only occur when you have a suction type of fuel pump such as was found on older cars & trucks.
The M has a gravity feed fuel system so unless you have a plugged fuel cap on the tank the problem is most likely with the ignition system.
Test for good spark when attempting to restart the hot engine. It should be bright blue & jump at least a 1/4" gap to a good ground.

That coil is original? Quite old, so it may be weak. Check for weak spark hot or change coil. Renew the condensor and points for sure if original or rather old. Too lean on hot start-up possibly, adjust the low speed screw for best running engine hot. This screw will enrich the mix if you turn it in toward the seat. Works opposite to high speed needle. Is it running good hot both low and high speed, good power? Vapor lock is usually a condition in the fuel supply line caused by a fuel supply line running too close to hot parts. Check for lines too close to hot manifold etc.. I doubt vapor lock.

You need to check why your M won't start when it is hot. No spark ? No fuel ? It should be getting air. I would check for no spark first. The coil or condensor could be failing when it gets warm.

I doubt that it is vapor locked. The frost is pretty normal when the weather is humid or cold. Once the tractor warms up, it will go away.

I believe that it is possible to add power steering to your M, but um, well, maybe you try to get it to run right first.
