i am working on a '52 farmall H for someone else and it isn't charging, how do i check if the generator is charging or not, i tried a test light but i got nothing, but i'm not sure on how to check it either. it is also a 6v. and i already used a tester on the battery that is used for testing charging equipment, now i'm trying to pin point the problem. thanks for any help.

I had the same problem with my H, and Super C.

Take the brush cover strap off the generator, get a piece of emery cloth about an inch wide and clean the snot out of the armature, should be shiny copper. You will have to lift the brushes up off the armature to snake the emery paper around the shaft. You don't even have to take the generator off, removing the hood gives you more room to work though. Rotate the generator by hand (ignition off) to clean all the way around it.

I had absolutely no charge before I did this, and now I'm getting up to 30 amps on high charge, and 10 amps on low charge at high rpm's.

Good Luck

i get stuck on step one, first the lights don't work and the needle doesn't move whether i try to turn the lights on or the ignition.

Look for a bad battery cable connection - check both ends of BOTH cables! Look also for a bad (open circuited) ammeter or an open circuit between regulator "L" terminal and the ammeter.

i took the cover off the generator and it looks and smells like the generator got very hot and melted the wires in the generator. if i get a good generator will that fix it or is there something else wrong that caused it to get hot. thanks for your help

If your generator failed due to an internal short in the armature, simply replacing the generator should solve your problem. (This happened to one of mine this spring...) However bad regulator can also quickly fry a good generator.

Good practice is to install a new regulator when you replace any generator. Consider it $40 well spent!
