The Temp. gauge goes into the red within 5 minutes of starting the tractor. (no load). I assumed it was the thermostat and replaced it. Still does the same thing. Im now thinking its the gauge and would like to know the running temp. to check the temp of the antifreeze. I replaced the gauge in January of this year, I cant believe its bad but the tractor doesnt seem too hot when I shut it down. Pump seems to be working. Any other ideas?

If it were boiling you would know it.

Don,

Stick a thermometer in the radiator when she shows hot.

If the gauge is up in the red that temp should show about a 230 to 250 degree reading or higher.

Anything less and you've got a bad gauge (if the water is circulating).

Allan

We need some history on this machine. Just get it? Gramp's tractor? Fencerow deal? Let us know. Mguy.

Ive had it for three years and have been using it to pull wagons and grade my driveway. I put a aftermarket three point hitch on it. Its worked great. It use to be on a farm about four miles from my place. When they got out of farming it was given to my wife's family (whom junked the picker) and I got it from them for exchange for plowing time. It sat for 25 years and it took me about a month and lots of $$$$$ to get it working. My father in law broke the temp gauge cable when we were installing a block heater this last winter. Is this the history you were looking for?

Feal the hoses for heat on both sides of the block heater. One side should be warm and the other cold when the tractor is running. There is a valve in the heater to keep the water from circulating in the wrong diriction. If this valve is not working properly, this may be your problem. Just a thought.

Broke the cable, I don't think those are repairable, you just answered your own question. With no load, it may take 15-30 minutes just to get in the "run" range.
