I thoguht Iposted this already but it seemed to disappear,anyhow,I have yet to hear from the guy about the "Q" M but I have given up on it,but I have a couple of questions about he 3F,why did IH go with letters instead of of like 3F,and what were the desinations for the A,B and H,if any?

Well, folks try to read all sorts of things into the designations or names of tractors, probably making a mountain out of a molehill. They probably wanted to continue the F-for Farmall, but wanted to get out of the rough horsepower numbers to avoid compasison with the F-Series, since IH really revamped the structure of its line, and the new tractors didn't really correspond to the older models (IH squeezed so much more horsepower out of the F-20 replacement that it had more horses than the F-30, for instance).

A was 1-F
H was 2-F,
M was 3-F.

There were many different designations throughout the development program, the #-F actually didn't last that long. The B was a direct offshoot of the 1-F, I don't think it was ever anything other than the two row A or the B.

We have a book with pictures of the 3F in it. Are there any pictures of the 1F and 2F out there? Where could I see them at?

The IH Archives has at least a couple thousand shots of experimental tractors between about 1921 and 1942, scattered shots in other years. At the IHCC Winter Convention in Madison in February, we'll be offering a limited number of spots on tours of the Wisconsin Historical Society.

Mr. Fay, those are some cool pictures, Are those tractors still around or did they get destroyed? if they are around, Do they run? If i were to go to the wisconsin historical place, could i get a tour, or you can only get those kind of things? Thanks for posting the pics.

Surviving IH experimentals are very rare- IH liked to destroy them, either in testing them or afterwards, so that they didn't have to supply parts for them.

The Wisconsin Historical Society is open to the public. Nothing's really on display, they have a reading room and bring the stuff out to you. The best thing to do is contact them ahead of time, and they can do some searching in the databases for you.

There will be behind the scenes tours of the storage and processing areas offered during the IH Collectors Club Winter Convention in February. Hit the link below for information about the convention.

The Wisconcin Historical Website is really neat. Thanks for putting that on the web. I always thought it would be really neat to go back to the 50's and live for a while. To me that was just a really neat time in IH history. Maybe I would have been able to give some advice to the IH execs to put IH at the top and stay there so they would still be around today instead of being owned by New Holland

The IH Experimental and Prototype tractor book I did many years ago had a bunch of photographs in- it's out of print, I don't think anywhere has any copies left except used. Best bet at looking at the book is your local library- they probably won't have it on the shelf, but can get it through interlibrary loan.

Guy, that is fascinating. I had never heard of the "experimental F" tractors. How about a second edition of your out-of-print book? You could sell a couple of hundred right here on this sight!

H was a 2F,as far as i know only 2 made in 1938 then they were called hs.
