I just purchaced a 1961 (?) 2404 IH with a front end loader. I'm in the process of fixing all those "little" things that are wrong when you buy an old tractor. It has disc brakes with 2 discs on each brake shaft. They are worn were the "bars" in the discs are bearly visable. I cleaned every thing up and adjusted them up so I had pedal (with the help of a few shims), but I still can only get a small hint of brakes. Does anyone know how thick a new disc is?? It seems like that is the problem, but my experiance has always been that if you have any lining, and can get pedal, you should have some brakes.

Did you disassemble the brake pressure plates? I had one recently that the pins where the linkage attaches froze up and had good pedal and absolutely no stop. If you can get some pedal it should have some stoppage. I can't say how thick new discs are,but I would guess near 1/2 to 5/8 of an inch.

Yes, the pressure plates were working. The discs were glazed over (no oil) I roughed them up with 80 grit sandpaper. The lining was about 1/4 inch thick on each side of the disc. I cleaned and sanded all braking surfaces, they aren't perfect, but are free of rust, dirt and shiny surface. Thanks for the reply!

With a half inch of disk, it should stop. Usually if you can still see the grooves on the disks,it will still stop, sort of like wear bars on tires.
