Jim: The casting codes, while they may not be conclusive if close to the change from M to SM. Those dates are the little series of letters and numbers that look like they have a round head screw cast between them. These give the day and month by number and the year by letter X is 1952, Y is 1953, etc. V was not used. These will also tell you if tractor is original if codes are same or two consecutive years. Wider spreads than that would indicate someone has built a tractor from two doner tractors. Should be a code on each cast piece of tractor.

Super M should have the number 264 cast into the right side of th block toward top rear corner. Super should have a small IH emblem on the top of the grill, the M will have a longer "Farmall" badge. Super will have disk brakes with cast iron covers. MOST of the M models will have band brakes with a sheet metal cover. Disk brakes were on the very late M, and some of them - even early ones - came with a Lambert disk brake which is not made like the ones on the Super. Super M has noticeably faster 3rd and 4th gears. If the tractor has live hydraulics and the battery under the seat, it"s likely a Super M. The early Super M did not have the live hydraulic unit. There are some other differences, such as clutch diameter, that aren"t so obvious.

Farmal M had a 248 ci block, usually marked on right side near rear of engine, super had 264 block. Regular M has drumn brakes, super has disc, believe super had faster gearing.

Only things I can add is that Super M's had a 12 volt system with flat headlights along with what everyone previously said and all the Supers I've seen had a distinctive lower front casting just above the front wheels to to accomodate the newer style front mount cultivators, this one would have been hard to take from any other tractor except another super or smta or later. We got into a heated discussion about this a few months ago in this forum. I'm not sure the SM on the ser # plate means Super. The Supers were only built one or two years. I think 52-53. There seems to be a lot of old M's running around with SM on their SN plates. Beware!!

CNKS, that might be but!!! The one we had and several that I've driven over the years were all 12volt systems. There may have been an option to order it that way. Dad ordered ours so I don't know and it may have been for cold weather starting. I'll have to check my Red book guide when I get home it will list what was stock and optional. If I'm wrong sorry for the mistake. I know one thing, we had a 51M,53SM and a diesel SMTA and if it wasn't for the live hydraulics and power steering I'd take the old M anytime and it was stock.

I don't think it was an option -- A lot of them have been converted--people seem to think they have to have 12 volt, rather than maintaining the 6 volt system. The M was boderline for 6 volt, anything smaller, there is no need for 12 volt.
