Worn speed lever problem

Hello-

I took the governor assembly off my BN, and found a few problems. One, the gasket failed at the top, and water got in. The sludge in there was white because of the water, and most of the assembly is rusted inside. However, the rust doesn't seem to have damaged anything, nor does there appear to be any damage to the gear on the engine side.

The speed lever is just loosely in the hole, which puzzles me - shouldn't there be a bearing or bushing in there to steady it? I don't see anything in the parts diagram though. Anyway, the fact that it was rocking from side to side in that hole over 67 years caused part of the shaft attached to the lever to wear. Do you think this will be a problem?

ffolkes, Other than the felt seal that goes on the outside of that bore, there is no bushing. I rebored mine at work and made a new shaft to get a good fit. You might get a local machine shop to do that for you! If I can help let me know!

Your description seems to indicate it is quite worn. I had mine bored for a bushing and a new shaft made. New oil seal also. I recommend you get it reconditioned or find another in beter shape.
