I've done it many times. The longer you wait the worse it is. In my experience cows that have a premature calf or twins will retain it nearly 100% of the time. Uterine inversion is another fun deal.

If one of my beef cows hasn"t cleaned in 48 hours I have the vet come out to clean her. Probably 1 out of 100 births has that problem. I figure it just goes with the territory of having a cow herd.

I have to clean a few beefer's every year. I just put in a couple of afterbirth boulus pills and in a day or two she's cleaned out. I get the pills from the local vet, they were still avaliable last spring. If you leave them about half will clean on their own, but the other half will rot and the cow will get sick and require antibotic treatment. Then its really fun cleaning out the rotten stuff!

I have done this several times. We use to use uterine bolises inserted right in the uterus which meant in to the arm pit. Drug companys dont make thes boleses anymore now we give the cow a shot of something I cant recall the name of but is mostly an antibiotic and seems to work fine.

I'm with country lad, leave well enough alone. It don't seem to hurt none to let nature take it's course. At least I have a real good conception rate.

NC,

Help me understand this. You just let it rot? Doesn't she get sick?

'Course I'm thinking along the lines of Holsteins and we couldn't have any antibiotics in the milk.

A

We usually have a few every year that don't clean. Our usual procedure is to run 'em into a chute then take two sticks about a foot long(even some stout bullweed stems will work) and just start twisting the cleanings in between them, pulling gently, until pretty much "everything" has come out. Usually doesn't take much pulling. That stuff would probably work it's way out eventually most of the time, but I don't think leaving it in there would be too good as a general practice, since in some cases it's been a day or two too long before we get around to it, and wow...talk about stink!!!(hope nobody's eatin' their breakfast and reading this at the same time).

Oh, I suppose she runs a low grade fever for a while and it likely affects her milk production.

My vet tells me not to do this. According to him you increase the possibility of infection. I was glad to hear this! Wish other good livestock men would comment.

Hmmm.,

Yes, he'd probably much rather ya took her into him for him to do; then he would of course send you the bill.

Tough way to make a living.
