How come most pics of H's have no fenders?

On the '49 H I just brought home it had no fenders. I been looking at pics of the H's on YTMAG and about 10% have fenders and 90% don't.

Were these prone to rusting out or just removed and never reinstalled? What is the going cost for a pair of useable fenders?

Shep, you just caused me to have a flashback I know the reason we didn't have fenders on our H was because of the stupid cultivators because if you had the old style type cultivators converted hand lift ones you had link arms running over the rear axle and they were in the way I know because our H fenders hung in the barn and I kept wanting to put them on so he let me one time and they were cool till cultivating time and if anyone has put on a set of those steerable cultivators before you had to be very serious about that because it took a good day to put them on and that was just one more thing to deal with because by the time you set the wheels out fully and remove the drawbar with the trusty gooseneck wrench and then make sure when you dropped the rear plow unit perfectly aligned last year. Anyway that's whole nother forum no wonder my back hurts.I wish that every farm sale I've gone to that I had bought all the fenders I saw in the sales going for sometimes 2.50 to 5.00$ a set ouch! Thats my two cents worth.

Fenders were an option except some states required them to be installed at the time of delivery. Iowa did not have that law so a lot of H'sand M's came without fenders, Dad's didn't have them

Hi Ya, Don,

Yep, the hydraulic-lift cultivator mounted across that axle too. The axle was the fulcrum point of it's lift for both the front and back units.

Bean cutter lift systems bolted to the rear axle.

Loaders strapped to it too and because the little H had a weakness for splitting it's sweet self in two, all that strutting arrangement had to be mounted to the axle as well.

But, I guess those fenders look good in the pictures of the H working real hard pulling a hay wagon. :>)

Allen, those old IH loaders were a piece of work too weren't they? Now that I think about it every thing we did with that tractor with a mounted tool took hours but I guess vs doing it by any other way was not a good option. I can't tell you how many jobs we did leaving the front set of cultivators on the H during the summer included leaving the rear wheels set wide and trying to rake hay and not having it turn into a buck rake. My brothers and I had had arms like a linebacker after doing the spring barn cleanouts with the old loader and no power steering.Ahhh!! the good old days. Have a good one!

Of the 4 H's I have owned, only 3 came with fenders. I added the missing fenders as soon as I could. The M also has fenders.

Farmalls without fenders look nekkid to me!

The reason was mostly the fully mounted corn pickers and cultivators. Most of the row crop John Deeres of that era never had fenders either, for the same reason.

Yeah, and here again, I guess it is all in what a guy is used to.

I see a H or M with fenders and it looks really strange to me. But, I guess some guys who just used 'em on an auger or in the hay fields had 'em on. Can ya imagine crawling on one of those old gals with fenders? UGH! :>)

Hi Shep,

In row crop areas, fenders usually weren't sold with the tractor as the farmer would just have to take them back off again anyway.

If the tractor was originally equipped with fenders, they would end up standing behind a shed somewhere.

Cultivators, hay bucks, beet toppers, loaders, etc. all were mounted right across that axle where the fender normally mounted. Fenders were just in the way on working tractors.

Shep: As most of the others said the fenders were an option. They certainly didn't keep dirt off you. I have heard tell of several people being injured by the fenders getting on and off the tractor. I have never heard tell of anyone falling off because of no fenders.

I know you are and Oliver man and must admit most of the fenders on row crops of that era, other than Farmall did keep the dirt off operator somewhat. The worst dirt problem I recall was rear tire going into a rut full of water, made by the same tire. The curl of most fenders would catch that, but not a Farmall fender.

None of the other makes were any easier to get on and off with fenders, however. Farmers of that era had to hussel, they didn't need the leg injuries created getting on and off fendered tractors.

On those row crop Olivers, like the 66,77,88's, what did they do with the fender mounted lights and wires when the fendes were taken off for a picker or cultivator or axle mounted loader?

My Dad bought one new tractor in his life, a '43 H. It came with fenders, and he took them off to mount the cultivators. They never went back on the tractor.

In the corn belt not many fenders were sold for H's and M' because they wer in the way for the earlier cultivators and the 24 picker. A lot of them were taken off and throwed in the corner or maybe hung up in some shed. Some of the good ones are being gathered up and sold or maybe put back on Grandpa's H that some one is restoring. Also it depended a little on the dealer. Some dealers pushed the fender option a little more than others. They were an option and did not come with the farmall tractors as many brands such as Case an Oliver did.

Never saw an H or M with fenders til they started bringing them in from the west. They really looked funny with fenders. Much easier to climb on and off without fenders. Now fenders are catching on.

I put some aftermarket fenders on my H and they are better than nothing for keeping the dirt off of your lap, but not by much.

Shep - I don't think I ever saw fenders on an H (or M) here in upstate NY until I began visiting tractor shows. And even today at show's I'd guess less than 25% of the restored H's have fenders.

My suspicion is it was a cost issue for the farmer when the tractors were first purchased. Case in point: My father in law bought several H's and M's new (both standard and Supers) - none of them ever had fenders.

From what I know, Fenders where an extra cost option. A lot of people didn't want to spend the money for them. As far as cost for a pair---a NEW set in primer will run ~150-175. a used set in good shape with no dings will run $175-200.

Fenders on a Model H or M were an option, most farmers around here (Md) did not get them due to having to pay extra for them.

You can pick up a set of repro's on eBay for around $150.oo or go for an orginal set, they usually sell anywhere from $125.oo to $275.oo for a set in good condition.

The fender spacers are usually sold separately, the orginals have 5 spacing holes and the repro's usually have 4 spacing holes in them.

Saw the pictures of the H that you got for free, it looks good to me.

Anyway you needed a red one to keep them O-lee-vers company at night.

Fenders were an extra cost add on to the later H's. I think most farmers of the time didn't want to spend money for fenders that are so small that they didn't offer much protection.

My family has farmed in the Central Michigan area for 4 generations. In our area in the 40's you didn't go to the dealer and pick out the list of options that you wanted like people do today with cars. You were just lucky to get one. My grandpa had his name in at 5 IH dealers in our area. When he finally did get his M it came with a cultivator a plow and yes a set of fenders. My entire family owns around 20 H's and M's they all have fenders. We always kept them on as a safety precaution. If you have ever plowed with a Farmall you would appreciate the fenders as something to lean on after hours of your right tire in the furrow. I grew up on the fender of my dads Super MTA while he was either planting cultivating doing work with the loader pulling beans but unfortunately most of the time was picking rocks. I would have to say that most of the Farmalls that I see in our area have fenders. Most attachments went on fine if you have the spacer bushings between the fender and the axle housing. We also had the fender extensions to help save your knees.
