Shaun, years ago before I did an overhaul on mine, I seem to remember mine doing the same. What I remember is finally taking the head off and cleaning carbon build-up, due to using what ever gas was laying around the place. Seems that under load, the deposits can glow and cause pre-ignition, when the engine would be under a steady load for a bit. It stopped this habit, but I did double check the other possibles like point condition, gap and timing, plug range, cleaning the airfilter and making sure that the carb was clean. Going to a hotter plug seems to help with the deposit thing, or maybe I just use better judgement for gas and never using the can for the trimmer. It disappeared after cleaning the head and has never reappeared. I think I use UD-16 Champions for plugs. By the way, could you, if not too much trouble send me a pick of your mower and setup for your tractor? It would be appreciated. LW
