504 clutch problem

I put in a new clutch and pressure plate during my 504 gas rebuild project. I have run out of adjustment room on the treaded rod travel. I am able to shift gears easy enough and do most work with the tractor except for one problem. When the tractor is under tension, say when using a back blade and pushing dirt into pile. I stop and try and shift to a foward gear I can not shift unil I release the tension, say tow the tractor aheat slightly. The same for moving foward and under tension I can not shift into reverse. What did I miss during the clutch rebuild? Oh, I do not have any prior history on the tractor, I bought it in the not running condition.

Thanks to all that responded. I took your advice, and reread the instructions. This time I put my glasses on when I read them. I originally set one of the rod free plays as 9/16" it should have been 3/16", It was a International 504. Wow, now it works great.

The others are correct, the TA clutch needs to be adjusted every time the main clutch is adjusted. Also, when you replaced the pressure plate on the clutch did you check the finger heigth? If they are set incorrectly, it can mess up the location of the clutch rod adjustment clevis.

Did you adjust your Torque Amp. too? Sounds to me like you have one and its adjusted up wrong. To get by for the time being, you can just pull the T/A handle right before you shift.

Nellie, Adjust the T/A like the book says or you will be splitting the tractor again.
