Help! 407 vs. 407 turboed

Had the harmonic balancer go out of our 1256 and take some teeth of a timing gear, a head bolt seized in the block and while trying to get the stub out the local weld shop cracked it. Pretty much went from not so bad to bad to worse! Is a non-turboed 407 plumbed any different internally that a turboed 407? Thanks guys.

The last couple issues of Hook Magazine has indepth articles on the 400 series IH motors. The writer of the article says that there are alot of differences between a naturally aspirated 407 and a turbocharged 407 motor. The main difference is strength in the crankshaft and some plugs in the oil gallies of the block. If you have a buddy that has the magazines for you to borrow and read that would help you out the most. I would have to reference the articles to give you accurate information. Let me know if this is any help or if you need more info.

the 400 sreies engines that the hook showed were the 414, 436 and 466. these are newer engines than the 407 and they are completely different engines.

By changing out the rods and pistons a 407 can be changed into any of the engines that you just listed.

No it can't. The good old 361/407 is totally 100% different than the 400 series 414/436/466. Mabey a 407 can be built to have 414 or 436 cubic inches, but that does not make it a 400 series.

This is a lot of help. I will be using the old crank not the one from the naturally aspirated engine. The plugs you refer to, you are talking about freeze plugs right? The main thing I was curious about was if internally they are plumbed to spray oil in the same places. We have a 671 Detroit for instance, and I know they are plumbed different between the naturally aspirated and those stock with a turbo.

I'm not 100% sure on this, but I think that the DT-407 has two piston cooling oil jets per cylinder, while the D-407 has one jet and a plug that can be removed to add the second jet.

The plugs that I am talking about spray oil on the bottom of the piston to keep them cool. I think that the naturally aspirated motor does not use these, thus the holes are plugged off. if all you are doing is a block swap I think you will be OK. Just swap all oil nozzles from the original block to the replacement.
