Spark plug question

Hello-

My B has Champion D16 plugs in it, but out of curiosity I looked it up in the parts manual. I was surprised to find several different categories for spark plugs...

Normal service
Light or moderate service
Severe service
Extremely severe service

Each category has a different plug listed.

I've never heard of a manufacturer specifying a variety of options like that. What could change in a plug to make it appropriate for light use, but not "severe" use?

Thanks.

Hmm...it's not run very often.

However, besides driving, it's run at full throttle 99% of the time.

Which "category" would you recommend?

It is not so much a question of how much throttle, it is more a question of how hard are you working the engine. Full throttle in a parade is quite different from full throttle pulling a plow. Pull your plugs. What do they look like? Burning tips or insulators? Go to a lower heat range. Fouling? Switch to a higher heat range.

Most importantly, does it run fine with these plugs? Any fouling? I had to switch to a D23 equivalent for pulling. I won't mention any brands, CNKS.

Problem in light-use tractors, is they don't get run long enough at a time to keep the plugs clean. If your plugs are black, use a hotter plug -- D21 or equivalent. Lets not start a plug war, I'm referring to heat ranges, not brands.

The greater the volume of fuel/air mixture being burned, the hotter the combustion (and the spark plug tip) will be. So, a plug designed to operate well at low temps can be heat damaged if operated under mostly high heat conditions and, by the same token, one designed to operate well at high load conditions can foul out if it seldom gets up to its optimum operating temperature.
