Are diesel fuel supplements really worth buying?I have religiously used them in thinking they help keep injectors clean and aide in better fuel economy.Your opinion is valued.Thanks.

on your off-road farm equipment you can use A.T.F. it will help clean the fuel system and injectors.

Hi, years ago Diesel fuel additives were not as necessary as they are today. The EPA people have been after the oil companies to reduce the sulphur content of Diesel fuel. The sulphur adds lubricity to Diesel fuel which lubes the injector pump and valves and upper cylinder walls.
With low sulphur Diesel fuel it is necessary either to add a fuel conditioner or a little engine oil to lube the injector pump. This is extremly important for older tractors that relied on the lubrication from the Diesel fuel.

My 2 cents

Greg, I bought a little diesel a few years back that had not been taken care of over its life. You couldn't start it without ether, it had sat in a shed for 8 years. After doing the filters and lubricants it was still a hard starter and a poor runner, that's when I poured the diesel conditioner to it. I use a three in one formulae purchased at our Canadian Tire chain. The formulae cleans injectors, removes moisture and lubes the pump. After a few tanks of fuel was put through it it now starts easily and runs well. I put this product in my 584 as well just to take care of anything that might be in the fuel. I also add a quart of oil to the diesel fuel in the cold weather or when real heavy slugging is coming up like ploughing. The oil lubes the pump as well and it does give energy value to the fuel. Trucking companies have been doing this for years, filter their used motor oil and add it to the fuel. A product that will clean injector tips is well worth the money spent on it. I now have a great running small diesel tractor because of additives, I didn't have to rebuild the pump or remove the tank to drain it, or replace injectors.....Mike in Exeter Ontario

My Mercedes has always had Red Line catalyst added to the fuel for years. It runs much better than other cars with the same miles. I tried the Red Line cetane boost (it is safe for catalytic Diesels) in my Volkswagen TDI. I didn't notice any improvement in mileage or power. I think the newer engines, especially those designed for European use do not need additive as long a good quality fuel is used. With older equipment, I think an additive is a good idea as they were not designed for the fuels that are available today. With that said, we have no trouble with our almost 50 year old locomotives running on the California formula Diesel.

I never believed in them and thought they were a waste of money,,,until,,,my 1466 started missing a little at idle and seemed to hunt while not under a load. I went and talked to the guys at the pump shop and they told me I probably had an injector acting up. They sold me a diesel addative (can't remeber the name, but I'll get it if you want me to) and I poured it in the tractors tank at more than triple bulk tank strength. After about ten minutes it cleared right up. I was actually sort of surprised, I always buy name brand bulk fuel and I figured it had all of the additives I needed. I treat all of my bulk fuel now and the problem has not returned.
