TD9 engine oil

What type of engine oil was recommended for the TD9 engine? This would be the same engine as a WD9. We've been using diesel engine grade 30W, but I don't know if this is correct. I started the tractor last week to move it after it sat for a few years, and the oil on the dipstick seemed very thin and clear, so it looks like it's time to change oil. Is it possible for diesel fuel to seep from the fuel pump to the motor, to cause this dilution? The rear seal started to leak bad when it was running. I'm guessing that the diluted oil would pass thru the seal easier.

I've had this same problem on 3 out of 4 of my diesels. The seal on the shaft is leaking and letting fuel into the engine, YES. Also the seal on the primary pump is letting fuel past into the sump of the injector pump. If you don't fix both seals you will still have a problem. If you are interested I can give you a name of a good place to get the parts. I also have the fuel injection parts manual if you need #s. E-mail Hallocktractor@aol.com

Typically, in Ohio 30W diesel oil would be good, but I suggest a 10-30 for cold winter weather. I would also suggest that you start it at least once every 6 months.

First, is the oil level in the crankcase high? If it is smell the oil and if it smells like diesel fuel, then that is what you have mixed in. The diesel fuel is likely bypassing the seals between the injector pump and the gears that drive it. I’m not sure how the TD9 is designed as to if this is something that you can do yourself or not. Shop manual will help you out on that one!

The leaking seal could be from the crankcase being overfull and compression blow by pressure causing it to blow out or just plain from old age and setting so long.

Thanks for the advice. The oil level on the stick is quite high, and it seems like diesel. I'm going to drain it and change oil, and see what happens then. The fuel injector pump was leaking some fuel around the throttle shaft a few years ago, so maybe it's leaking to the front also. I'll drain and refill the injector pump too. We're in MN, so I'll probably use 10W-30 diesel oil when I change it.
