I have searched the discussion forums for this question, but have not come up with an answer.I was wondering if anyone knows the difference between the F series tractors being painted with red or grey paint. No one around me knows why, even the old timers I know that use to work at an IH dealer in town in the 50's. I have a 1938 F-14 with steel I am getting ready to work on, and I am pretty sure it should be red, but why were some grey? Thanks for any response you give.

I am in the process in restoring a 35 F12 and it has red paint undersome of the parts that I have removed.I have also noticed some 35 F12's that were painted gray. Now from what I have gathered,International switched the color of paint sometime in the production of the the F12.My serial numbers are close to the middle of the year, don't know exactly where. So,the answer to your question as to why some F14 are painted gray? My guess is that they either wanted to look old or they don't know what thy had or you were looking at older F12s.The F12s and the F14 look alot alike, just about the only quick way to tell the difference is to look at the steering rods. The F12 is flat and close to the gas tank. The F14 is raised at the gas tank and on about a 10-20 degree angle from the steering wheel to the steering sector.

I'm surprised you didn't find this one in the archives. Nov 1936 IHC switched to from gray to red, this was the start of the 1937 model year. Dealers would run winter specials on repainting the old grey ones. Guy Fay can tell you more about this. I would recomend picking up his books.

The decision to switch from gray to red was supposedly a safety issue. Red was easier to see by motorists. It certainly wasn"t a budget issue because red paint is always more expensive and is alot harder to paint with.
