Did Farmall make haying attachments specifically for the Super A? if not, what types of equip can be adapted to the Super A. I'd like to see if there is a suitable mower, tedder and baler out there somewhere....thanks to all.

Bill, I grew up on an H and Super A we wore out a rear mount mower. With both tractors we could mow 20 acres in 4 hrs. For years Dad had a IHC 50T hay baler, it had a power unit on it "standard equip" many times I have been raking with the H while Dad pulled the baler with the Super A.

Bill: There was a complete line of mowers made for the Super A; side mount, rear mount and semi mount. I never dreamed of using any tractor for raking other than SA or 130.

I have even baled a few loads of hay, pulling a NH S-69 baler with thrower and a 20' wagon behind, on level ground, with my Farmall 130.

I had an uncle that milked 20 cows back in the 1950s and did all his farm work with a Super A including mowing, raking, baling, hauling, manure spreading, plowing, etc. He farmed close to 100 acres and Super A was only tractor.

There is a guy near here, just finished restoring a Farmall 300 his dad bought new. When his dad bought this tractor new it was to farm 500 acres, cash crop. He had one other small tractor.

Hugh,
Thanks for the great info. Does the NH stand for "New Holland"?? Need to know where I can find one. I have a sickle bar that does ok, but I am looking for a mower that will do a nice clean job in (sometimes) heavy stuff. Then all I would need is a rake? and baler? Thanks again for the always good info....

Bill: Yes NH stands for New Holland, and when your looking at New Holland balers get one with the plunger mounted on sealed bearing rollers. I think, if I remember correctly, it started with the 66, 67, 68 and 69 series when they became Supers. Those were produced at first as just plain numbered series and in the early sixties they all became Supers. The rollers make the plunger move so much easier, thus less hp is needed.

All the IH mowers built for the Super A were good mowers, as long as the wear plates, hold downs, ledgers and knives are in good shape. Check that one out carefully as those wear parts are quite expensive. I always say a mower is worth scrap metal price plus the cost of all those wear parts that you don't need to buy to make it work well.

I ran all of my hay making equipment with a Farmall BN. That is alomost identical to the SA.
You can easily attach a sickle bar mower to the drawbar. It will pull a rake. We even pulled a PTO driven NH S66 baler. It worked quite well.

A friend of mine has a side mount sickle on his Super A. It raises and lowers automatically using the exhaust to drive it. Push a button and it reroutes the exhaust into a cylinder and raises the sickle. Neatest thing.

I have run a two row New Idea tedder with no trouble in 3 gear. The only trouble is that you can not raise the outside turtles for transport( no hydro remotes) Its really nice tedding with the A beacuse of its great visablity! Joe Z

Hello Bill, I have used and own model 16A rear mounted sicklemower. IH came out with a midmount sicklemower later that could be raised and lowered with the touch control. Cutterbar lengths were 5ft to 7ft.I think that tractor would be fine to run a tedder, although I have never done it. The baler would be pushing it, but I have heard of guys that have done it.
