Why do you see so many old Farmalls with the insert gone out of the grille?

Allan

Allan: John nailed it, all I can add is, it was a lot more difficult to install it properly so it would stay on, than it was to remove it. The only farmers that still have them are the guys that hung them in the barn or shed. Usually that is the original owner who no longer has the tractor, or the barn.

In fact most of those original owners of letter series Farmalls, sadly are no longer with us. Now there would be a good question. How many guys are still out there who bought a letter series Farmall NEW?

My dad still has the 1948 H he drove home new from the dealer in Feb. of 1948. I bet it was a cold ride in Feb. in east central Minnesota. It still has the original grill insert too.

GP: I knew there would be a few still around. I'll also take your word on just how cold that ride home must have been. I've never been to MN, but have seen some news footage of MN winter storm. Those winds couple with sub zero temps, made iron men.

They were held in with a bar that had ends that hooked on the rest of the grill. It was very easy to not get it seated properly, and if they would fall out while driving in the field they were next to impossible to find.

I like cat's answer better but I've heard that the cultivators and other implements hook up through that opening. I guess most were lost or tossed because it was just easier to leave the insert out.

I know with our old H it was for those old d!@# steerable cultivators there was a bolt on tongue that clamped on the steering shaft that came out that opening that's what made those plows so much fun to mount on. Like you and I discussed before Allen, same reason we left the fenders off. One day to get the tractor ready and a day to mount them. We actually had some old farmers buying used H's just to mount the cultivators on then left them on year round. Man! my back hurts just talking about it.

Same thing with the mounted cornpickers. There were a lot of M's that found a permanet home under one. Sometimes the screws vibrated loose on the inserts and they were lost in the field. My dad lost one on an Super H that way once.

You got that right, we had a New Idea mounted picker for our SMTA I remeber a few times discing for wheat with the front end left on, not something at 15 years old you'd want the neighborhood Vo-ag boys seeing you do. Man that was a backbreaking nightmare too to put on. Ouch!
