Okay, this is it. I have a 49m that starts to knock from the front of tractor when I drive in 5th gear a little over idle speed. It seems to do this about every revolution of the front wheels. The steering doesn'shake tho, does this sound like wheel bearings? PS driving full throttle in lower gears produces no noise or vibration.

Have you checked for play top to bottom/front to back with the front end jacked up off the ground? It coulde also be a loose mounting bolt on the rims that fasten the rim to the hub. If these all check out okay, remove the hub cap on each side and the large spindle nut and check the bearings and races. You could have a cracked race or a bad bearing or both.

Mine done this and it was a loose bolt on the wheel wedges. Also as othe post said could be a bad bearing. Drive one tire on front up on a 2x4 and check one side at a time for play. Might as well while checking bearings go ahead and pack them.

I'd vote for the wheel as well, if there's no slop in the steering wheel. I have a '44 M, and noticed a knocking one day in 5th gear. It was non-existent in lower gears; I suspected a tranny problem. Luckily, as I was walking past it the next day in the barn, I glimpsed the rusty-powder film around the bolts on the left front wheel. What a relief! Good luck with it; hope yours is as easily remedied!
