Int 384 Diesel Problem

I have a friend that has an International 384 diesel that he is having a problem with. I don’t know anything about diesels and I have never even seen the tractor as he lives miles away.
He is brush hogging with it and says that the tractor runs perfect on flat land and up hill, but when he goes down hill the engine over speeds (to the extent that he thinks the engine will blow)and he gets a lot of black smoke. Naturally, this is kind of dangerous here in WV’s rugged hilly land, not to mention that he is worried that it will throw a rod or worse.
He talked to someone at a local tractor dealer and was led to believe that he needed to get the injector pump rebuilt.
Anybody have any advice to give him that has experienced the same problem, a diagram of the pump or a source for a reasonably priced replacement pump?
It sounds like some kind of governor problem but he says that after he gets off the incline it takes awhile for the engine to slow to normal and acts like the engine is flooding with fuel.

Sorry for the long post !
Thanks !

Gary

Hi, had a similar problem with a B414D which is the older brother of the 384. When you went up a hill you had to give it almost full throttle and then going down hill it would run at max RPM and had to back off the throttle.

The problem turned out to be strip of rubber from the Diesel fuel storage tank filler hose had got inside the fuel tank of the B414D and every time you went up a hill it restrict the flow of Diesel fuel to the injector pump. The gouvenor inside the injector pump would attempt to compensate.

Look for the simple solutions first.

Good luck. JB

Hi Gary,

Knee-jerk reaction says to me that he has air getting into his fuel system....is he running down close to empty?

But otherwise, I think the dealer is right; pump time.

I'm not familiar with that specific model, but does it have an oil bath air cleaner (probably not), or any source for crankcase oil to be drawn into the engine, such as a crankcase breather that vents into the air cleaner ot intake manifold?

Some diesels even have little vent tubes under the valve cover that go down into the intake passages in the cylinder head.

If it has any type of crankcase vent into the intake, and something is missing or damaged, the engine could get s slug of it's own crankcase oil going down a slope, and overspeed, and smoke.

Also, if the crankcase is overfilled (possibly due to an incorrect dipstick) crankcase oil ingestion into the engine intake at certain angles could occur, also.
