OK So I got a lot of help from my post Friday night but I am still unclear as to what dots line up with what dots. According to the IT manual and a lot of your responses there should be a set of single dots and a set of double dots. However, on my 53 Super C there are 2 sets of single dots and a set of double dots. Now I have attached a link with pictures (I hope it works) showing how I have them lined up, then a second picture of how the dots line up once I rotate the crank 360 degrees (that would be 180 for the cam). As you can see I start with the single dots matching, then rotate and the single dots no longer match. My grandfather and I think I am 1 tooth off but are unsure. I would hate to get it all back together and then find out it was wrong. So I look forward to some insight tomorrow when I get on. Thanks again for everyone that responds.

Josh

P.S. If the link says it is unavailable or doesn’t exist try again in a little bit. I just posted the pictures and it takes the website time to catch up.

Ok from what I have heard from you guys is that the first picture is correct. And if I rotate the crank exactly 360 degrees that single punch mark on the crank that lined up with the single punch on the cam, should line up with the double punch on the cam. So if I time it like it is in the first picture they should be correct. Man I would like to get my hands on the guy with the punch! When I get it timed the way I think it goes I'll post some more pics so I make sure it is correct. I don't want to screw this up! El Toro you can email the diagram to JBlavl@aol.com. I would really appreciate it.
Thanks to everyone!
Josh

Hi Josh, Those pictures have me confused now. I'm
getting a copy of the timing gear train from an IH
dealer. I should have it by midweek. I'll send
you a copy of it if you want it. You can e-mail me your address if you want a copy. I didn't hide it this time. Hal

I agree - the double dot on the cam should line up with the governor (the governor should have double dots as well). The single dot on cam next to the double dots on the cam should be ignored.

With the single dots lined up as they are in the picture labled Super C Timing (Crankshaft and Camshaft gears) look at the camshaft gear 180 degrees around the gear and line up the two dots on the camshaft gear with the two dots on the mag or distributor drive gear and you should have it correct. Too bad someone made those extra punch marks to screw up the next person.

I see the problem. Your engine is on its side. So everything is 90 degrees off.

Looks to me like the single mark on the crank gear ON THE TOOTH and the single mark on the cam gear that is right next to the double mark (showing in the second picture) are both extra marks added by some back yard mechanic. Ignore them and use the original marks. In other words, the cam timing looks right to me.

Turn the engine to the position shown in the first picture and use the double mark to time the governor drive gear.

Maybe some of the others will have a different view on it.
