just bought my first tractor, an IH 2444, think its a 1970. Have ordered an owners manual for the series. This tractor has a F/E loader and 6' brushhog. There are fluid leaks, not enough to see while running, but enough to spot after its parked. The hydraulics all seem sound and don't leak. I think an approach to getting it into better shape would be to grease it up (done), change fluids/filters, adjust brakes (it stops if you stand on the pedals but is stiff), adjust linkages on various levers and controls, extend exhaust and maybe add muffler?, it really heats up my right foot. But what next? Advice anyone?

is your 2444 gas ? If so they seem to heat my left foot, especially if you have the 2050 loader, the frame channnels funnel the engine heat back on you.

You will need some appreciable weight hanging on the back to fully utilize the 2050 loader. Also if yours has the factory front crank mounted pump for the loader you need to put tranny fluid until it is 6 inches below the top of the filler /vent opening beside the gearshift. About 20 Gal total. If you have an aftermarket loader running from the engine mounted pump please disregard the above device.

I am in the process of replacing all of the hydraulic hoses and swivel fittings, which are seeping. And next weekend I am replacing my rear axle seals. Mine is a 1968 with a bit over 2000 hours on it.

Thanks Ben.
Mine is diesel. The exhaust pipe ends directly under my right foot. It does have the 2050 loader, and the crank mounted pump..And yes, those loader frame channels to funnel heat. In addition to the Brushhog on the back, the wheels are loaded with weights, not sure if that is all enough or not. I've only run it a few hours until I get all the fluids/filters changed. Most of the gauges are not in working order. thanks for that advice.

You will need to clean the suction screen. It is in the lower right front of the lift box assembly. You have to remove the shore section of hose, actually loosen and slide forward. Then there is one bolt that holds a clamp for the suction strainer. slide it out of the case and clean very gently with clean kerosene or somesuch and a soft brush. Replace the O ring when replacing the suction screen. I believe there are 3 or 4 plugs on the bottom of the tranny to change the fluids. Also the lift box needs to be drained seperately on the right rear as there is a standpipe in there and it holds about 3 gal or so of fluid. When filling pour at least 3 gal of fluid in the lift box and then the rest can go into the fill plug by the shifter. Any excess put in the lift box just overflows thru the standpipe into the tranny sump.

Oh I forgot about the weight thing. I have a 3 point bracket with 1,200-1,500 pounds of steel plates on the rear of my 2444. Rears are loaded as well. Backing up with a full bucket without the weight bracket on ....well lets just say that traction is very poor. Oh and the brakes....Not exceptional when working fine, but ok. You can get a new set of pads for a bit over $60 though.

Good little tractors, all in all.
