I have the chance to buy a Fast Hitch Sickle Bar Mower for my Farmall 100 and I was wondering if anyone had some opinions about which was better, Fast Hitch Sickle bar mowers or belly mounted ones? I got some mixed opinions although Hugh made a good case for avoiding the Fast Hitch version. Comments from personal experiences with either welcomed. Thanks, Ramon

I like my mid-mount mower. I wouldn't trade it for a rear mount any day.

Rear mount mowers are best for those who are still young enough to swivel their heads back and forth to watch the mower and where they are going at the same time. Belly mounts really cut down on that action, and to my mind make mowing a lot safer if there are any obstructions to worry about. Another good thing about the belly mount is that you can set the rear wheels out as wide as possible, or even use duals, for rough or steep ground. With any kind of rear mount you have to keep the right wheel in close enough so it doesn't stomp down the grass before the mower gets to it.

If you are just mowing hay the rear mount is fine and so much easier to hook up. If mowing around many trees etc. side mount is far better. Also if you had the belt drive side mounted you can mow road blanks, ditches and so on.

You certainly can! The sickle bar just does not drop down very far below ground level.
I have a fast hitch 7" sickle mower and really like it.
Any mower will have limitations so get the one that best suits the job at hand.

Wayne, Great. Do you happen to have any pictures of it. Some questions
1. Just as a reference point, about how far will the far side of the mower drop down to mow something like a road ditch (for example 1 or 2 feet)?
2.How does that compare to the belly mount type. 3. Does your 7 foot run off a SA/Farmall 140 family tractor? 4. How does it handle thick brush and in what gear do you mow?

The end of the bar will drop 2-3 feet(I think, never measured) below ground level.
I don't have any center mount experience; they are designed for roadside mowing so likely have more down travel.
Depending on the material being mowed, I use 1st, 2nd, or 3rd gear. With the engine running at operating RPM's (540 PTO) the sickle will cut 1" diameter or greater brush. Wouldn't recommend as a steady diet though; that what brush cutters are for.
I have the mower on a Super C Farmall but have mowed many miles & acres with a semi-mounted #27 on an H Farmall. Even used a #5 John Deere mower on a H for a time.

Sickle mowers were originally designed to cut hay, which was then windrowed and baled. For the most part, this procedure has been superseded by a windrower, which cuts and windrows in one operation. Belly mounts are like a lawn mower, they just shred everything and may pile it in clumps, if it is too big or too wet, but work quite well otherwise (mow when it needs it, not when you get around to it). Sickle mowers lay everything flat, if you mow a lot you will have a lot of residue to contend with. Belly mounts probably require less maintenance than a sickle, just an occasional belt and sharpening. If you only have a small area to mow, it probably doesn't make any difference.

Sorry, let me be more clear. There are Sickle bar mowers mounted on the rear via 1 pt Fast Hitch and Sickle bar mowers that are center mounted.These are the two I was looking for information on...Thanks

In that case I would rather have a side mount because of visibility, but it probably interferes with other implements. No problem if it is a dedicated mower tractor.
