I POSTED A QUESTION BEFORE ABOUT MY TRACTOR I JUST BOUGHT

HERE IS A PICTURE

JUST WONDERING IF IT 12 OR 6 VOLT. I THINK I AM MISSING SOME PARTS UNDER THE DISTRIBUTER CAP I AM THINKING THERE IS SUPPOSED TO BE A CYLINDER OR SOMETHING THAT THE LITTLE FLAP RIDES ON

ALSO WHAT YEAR MIGHT THIS BE AND WHERE MIGHT THE SERIAL NUMBER BE LOCATED I THINK IT IS A 1947 FARMALL A

If the battery is still there, count the number of cells (caps) 3 caps = 6 volts, 6 caps = 12 volts. No battery, check the ID plate on the generator.

Since you are going to have to rewire the tractor, suggest converting to a 12 volt single wire alternator. Several advertisers on this site sell conversion kits or you can purchase an alternator from the junk yard and do it all yourself. Converting to 12 volt now could save a big head ache - finding out that the generator or regulator are not working. Last regulator cost me $55.00, about two weeks ago.

I don't see a picture. IF it is a Farmall A, it is 6 volt (unless messed with by a former owner). The serial plate on most A's is on the left seat support. If it still has a magneto, the center of the distributor cap should have a small plunger on a spring. The spring would be entirely inside the hole in the cap.

the plate was painted over but i got the serial # its a 1946 A

the coil says 12 volt ?? how would i know if it has been switched

When people convert to 12 volts, they usually:
1) Change to 12 volt coil or put a ballast resistor in-line
2) Install a late model alternator in place of the 6 volt generator
3) Maybe change bulbs if the lights were working
4) Leave the 6 volt starter alone.

Since you have a 12 volt coil, it probably has been switched and you will find an alternator too.

hello

lights not working and wiring harness cut up and it still has a generator i think someone just put the 12 volt one in .
