I have read many posts about H starters locking up and I was beginning to think it was an old wives tale until yesterday when I went to elevate some hay, the H starter clicked in gave a grunt and the tractor was dead, couldn't shake it by rocking it in 5th. It took longer to get my wrenches than it did to pull the starter, I oiled the bendix and shaft end, put it back on and started the tractor right up, I've got 2 H's and have had them for over five years and this is the first starter lock I've encountered..so its no old wive's tale after all, but an easy fix!....Mike in Exeter Ontario

Michael: And I thought you were older than that, at least you look older than that to me. When I was a young lad, about the same time as you were, every 4 cylinder gas Farmall on the farm had a 3/4 wrench in the tool box. Most of the reasons you have been given are a hoax. The real reason is 4 cylinder gas Farmall, I've seen them do it when they were 6 months old. I've seen them do it just after a dealer rebuild and I've seen them do it when 10 years old.

I will say this, I have never seen the new clutch type starter drive do it. My Super A and 130 both used to do it before I installed the new type starter drive. I did not change either ring gear when I installed those starter drives. So now we can eliminate Farmall as the problem and put it right square where it belongs, "BENDIX", as other tractors using "BENDIX" used to lock up as well.

The starter locks when the gears of the bendix (starter drive) and the ring gear on the flywheel hit end to end and lock rather than engaging. It usually slowly gets worse over time. It is caused by the bendix teeth or the flywheel teeth becoming blunt on the end. If you are lucky replacing the bendix will fix, or at least help it. If not lucky the teeth on the ring gear have become blunt and the ring gear will need to be rotated or replaced. If you don't want to replace it, you can reshape the teeth with a file (slow but but cna be done) or with a Dremel equipped with a right angle head working through the starter mounting hole. Note the teeth will be blunted in 2 places on the ring gear 180 degrees from each other, since this is where the engine tends to stop. Also the starter is easier to free if you just loosen the bolts a little when rocking the tractor.

Oiling the bendix and shaft didn"t hurt anything but that is not what caused it to lock. It"s when the teeth on the bendix and also the teeth on the flywheel become worn that things tend to lock up once in a while. It probably won"t happen again for quite a while, but if it starts to become a problem for you it"s time to replace the ring gear on the flywheel.

Michael, for as long as you have frequented these pages have you ever caught anyone in a lie? By the way there are very few wives on here, they don"t tell tales and I wouldn"t call any of em old.

When I was a boy we had an H and the hand crank, could be put between the block and frame to carry it. The H was bad about locking if we could not rock it in fith then get the crank and just bump it a little. much easier than loosening the starter. I eat breaskfast 5 or 6 mornings a week with a 83 year old man that worked and retired from a IHC dealer it Springfield, Mo I think he said 39 years. Many of them he was Service Mang. He said the H"s and M"s both were bad.

Been there, luckily the one time that it happened to me I was able to rock it in 5th and it came free. With my luck it"ll lock up on me at the fair in a few weeks--lol ! ---Jeff

Ditto, but not repeated (for about a year) after I got the bendix lubed.
