I think someone did a partial 12 volt conversion on my rig (1953 Super C)however it appears as if I still have a 6 volt coil. All that seems to have been done was a 12 volt battery put in and a drop resistor between the coil and starter. I am not opposed to keeping my rig stock as I like my old timers to be that way. Is there a great disadvantage to 6 volt? A jumper wire is installed between the drop resistor and starter also. I am assuming this was done possibly because the start stop switch is not operating properly? The battery also had a disconnect added on to it so the neg side could be opened as if it were left on the battery gets drained down I am assuming by the coil somehow. Can you guys give me some tips on staying 6 volt or tell me how to go 12 volt properly if 6 volt is not a good way to keep it! Thanks Guys!!
Rob

The C123 is a small engine, thus it starts very easily on 6 volts. If it still has a generator, it was probably converted to 12 volts, it needs to be changed back (I don't know the details). The 6 volt starter works fine on 12 volts so it probably was not changed. Otherwise all you need is large battery cables, 1 or 2 gauge. The 4 of 6 gauge 12 volt cables are too small. Set it up with negative ground and be sure to polarize the generator.

I meant to say "set it up with POSITIVE ground". If you get an OEM type voltage regulator, it will last longer with positive ground.

The advantage of 12 volts over 6 volts is that
it uses half as many amps to do the same amount
of work therefore you can use smaller wiring
and switches. This is a real issue if you are building millions of cars or large aircraft
that uses miles of heavy and expensive copper
wire for you its a non issue. As long as you
can get the parts the easiest thing to do is put it back to original just use your service and parts manuals.
