My starter just grunts when I pull the starter rod on my C. The battery is fully charged. We pulled the starter off and jumped it- it spins fine. The brass "nub" (sorry I don"t know the technical term) is two-tiered. Should it be flat? Could the problem be the starter switch? I appreciate any help you can provide.

Thanks, Tom

I had a simular problem with my 350 farmall, turned out to be the spring on the starter gear was twisted or bent.

Two previous posts are good. You could try putting the starter back on with the switch 'off' the starter and jump it through the 'nub'. If it still bogs then the starter needs an overhaul. If it turns over good then replace the switch, about $8 at Case-IH, at least the last one I bought about 10 months ago was. My nub was also 'split-level' but still worked fine.

Free spinning and spinning with a load are 2 different things. My SA starter was dragging butt really bad so I took it apart and cleaned the armature, installed new brushes from NAPA, greased/lub where needed and now it spins at about a billion rpm on 12V. Mabye you can do the same to yours and see if it helps.

Clean all the connections and put new battery cables on it--minimum size, 2 gauge. Or, perhaps you do have a starter problem, doesn't take much to spin a starter when it is out of the tractor.
