warm rap

I have a H that starts rapping when the engine comes to operating temp. I pulled the pan and checked the bearings. all seemed tight. The valves seem to be adjusted the best i could get them whith the worn rocker ends. When the engine is cold you can just hear it if you put your ear to the oil pan. Once it warms up you can hear it just standing by the engine. Any ideas?

What's oil pressure like? If it falls to close to 0 as it warms up and the rap builds it's probably a worn rod bearing.

However if oil pressure stays in the normal range it could be piston slap, a worn piston pin bushing or possibly a loose/broken camshaft drive gear hub.

Try pulling the plug wires off one at a time with the engine running. If the rap changes it's a piston or bearing problem on the non-firing cylinder. If the rap doesn't change then it could be the camshaft gear.

I've seen cam gear failures on several Farmalls with live hydraulic pumps. It's caused by the added load of the pump on the gear. However if the cam nut was improperly installed on a tractor without live hydraulics, the nut could still work loose. That'll let the gear flop around inside the timing cover and cause the rapping exactly as you describe.

Quick way to determine if it's the cam gear is to pull the distributor drive (mark the rotor location first!) and peek inside. If you can move the gear at all with your fingers you've found the problem.

It could be a lot of things, but I would suspect crankshaft end-play, or worn wristpins... It will change sound when you short the plug on that cylinder, while it is idleing. If oil pressure is ok at Idle--warm, I wouldn't think it would be a rod bearing or main bearing.. Piston "slap" (worn pistons)will sometimes show up as the engine warms up and the oil heats and thins... If it is not too bad, and doesent get any worse, I'd suggest using heavier oil, and use it..may not get worse for 30 yrs....!!!!

the oil pressure stays fine close to the 75 mark, unless thats to high.. my other H has only about 30 pounds at the same speed. I like the cam gear idea, exept why would it change as the engine warms? I did try pulling each plug wire, made no change.
