I machined the pressure plates.009" per side, installed new clutch and release bearing. I wasn't sure how to adjust the clutch finger so I kept moving them out to get more disengagment. Now thier out as far as I can get them but still the gears grind . Is there some adjustment on the linkage that I haven't found??? I suspect that maybe the finger are wore out but I'm not sure what they looked like when new. I need help!

Hi, never worked on a 240U but had SC that would do the same thing and it was the pilot bushing.

Did you replace pilot bearing or bushing?
If it is a bronze bushing did you put lube in the bushing ?

Good luck

Yes I did all that. It just seems to not have enough disengagment

Sev:
Are you waiting long enough for all the shafts to stop rotating? There is sometimes enough rotational friction drag of heavy and or cold oil that one needs to wait till everything stops rotating before going into the next gear. I presume the tractor stops when the clutch is engaged and the engine is uncoupled from the transmission or is your problem that the engine still powers the transmission even when the clutch pedal is depressed?.

Sev, got the same problem with a '61 240U. Standing on the clutch and engine is still powering the trans ever so slightly, just enough to notice. I have to kick down the throttle almost to stall then jam my gear. Sounds frightful if I don't and pretty dang scarey when I do.

I think I might have the same problem on my IH 240U. I can shift ok if I don't hesitate when I shift...but if I take it out of gear and let the tractor sit for a minute I can't get it back in gear and it grinds quite a bit. My work-around is I shut the tractor off, press the clutch pedal and put it in gear with tractor off. I can feel something happen inside gear housing that clicks the shifters back into the right position. Then I take it out of gear and re-start and I'm able to get it into gear again ok. If you solved this problem let me know. It's probably easy but I'm just starting the refurb work so I haven't gone over everything yet. One thing I just realized from another post is I'm probably low on Hytran in the tranny, I only put in about 6 gal but I recently read that I'm supposed to have closer to 12 gal!! So that could be part of the problem.
