I have a 51 H, just recently purchased. It has been converted to 12 volt...they did a nice job. and everything works just fine...but I have a rookie question. The box for the old light switch no longer controls the lights....it is the four position box.....will it still control the charge rate (i.e. low for field work or high for yard work) or is the box non functional at this point? Also....how much and what type of oil goes in the little hole at the back of the starter with the flip up cap?
Thanks for the help....

Hi low charge will not be functional with either a generator/voltage regulator or an alternator. Does your amp gauge work?

The tractor does not have an alternator (can someone explain how the charging system was modified to charge 12v?) and it has a new ammeter which is showing a good charge.
Thanks

I have a 1941 W4 which is a simlar system. I converted it to 12v 3 yrs ago. Best thing I ever did. The big clunky 4 position switch works with either 6 or 12 volts. The low beam is just a coil resistor. The switch simply puts it in line with the lights.

I'll leave the charging question to them that knows - by the way - was an alternator put in with the 12V conversion? I have a single-wire 12V conversion with a Delco 10SI alternator and the charging rate positions on my switch don't have any effect (the charging rate is solely controlled by the internal regulator) but it controls the lights.

The H Owner's Manual says, regarding lubrication on the Starter or "Cranking Motor":

After every 300 hours of operation, put a few drops of SAE-20 oil in the cranking motor oil cup. Also put a few drops of SAE-20 oil on the bushing at the drive end whenever the motor is removed for service.
