I have the book "International Harvester Tractors 1955-1985" I have been reading through this book and it says that both the Hydro 186 and 1586 use the same engine type D-436. What was different from the two tractors that made the 1586 have 161 HP but the Hydro 186 to have only 105 HP. I understand that the hydro probably take the about 10 HP from the 186 to begin with. What would in involve to bump the Hydro 186 into the higher horespower range but not affect the performance or wear on the engine and tractor, especially the engine not running hot. Thanks

436 in 986 and 186 were naturally aspirated, without turbo, that is. Simply the biggest difference. I don't believe they had the big oil coolers that the 14 and 1586's had, either. I think Steven meant to say 86 and not 68, because the 14 and 1568's had the big DV-550 V8 engine. Simple typo, but just to clarify.

also the hydro robs a lot more that 10 HP. a LOT more. I have an old M with flat top pistons that will outpull my Hydro 86 on the road.

Adam some place in the book it should tell you that the 986 had the D436 as well, but the rear end is made for 160hp on the 1566 1568 the 1466 and 1468 had the DT436

Add a turbo and turn the pump up. Then you can expect to rebuild the hydro/PTO/final drive/ etc.
