The super A and the A both have a 113 cubic inch engine. The Super A1 has a 123 cubic inch engine.

Hi Larry, The Super C was first Farmall that had the C123 engine. Farmall A's, B's C's and Super A's and AV's had the C113 engine. This was from the factory, I boosted the A that I restored to 123cu-in. Hal

Hydraulics is a good indicator. Some people have managed to partly convert A's with hydraulics but usually don't manage a complete conversion to a Super A. If any A's came from the factory with hydraulics, it would have been darned few. My B, at 215,xxx is the highest serial A/B I have seen and there is no provision for hydraulics. There are a lot of smaller details that can be checked (e.g. quick attach drawbar, heavy fenders, styled instrument panel). No point going into all of them unless there is some other question about the tractor. If it has been in the family for a long time, it is probably one model or the other, not a messed up combination.

There is an exception to the front emblem being the "IH" if and only if it is a Super. The C had the "IH" emblem.

Did some of the "Super" models have larger steering wheel than the regular ones?

They went to the larger steering wheel for the Super A-1 in '54.

Brian: Hydraulics are one good indicator, although there have always been rumors a few Farmall A's at end of production in 1947 had hydraulics. I have seen one such tractor, but must admit I didn't check it in enough detail to say I'm 100% sure.

All letter series Farmalls regardless of size had on front of hood just above grill The word Farmall on pre Supers and the IH logo on Supers. As Jeff said serial numbers are the sure way to go. Tractor serial number should be on left seat mount, and engine serial number will be under No.1 spark plug on a flat machned surface and stanped in rather than cast in. If your tractor is A or early SA the two serial numbers should be close. On SA after 51 there became a spread as much as 2,000 in the two numbers.

Another item you can look at are casting codes. Those are the series of numbers and a letter and looks like a blade type round head screw cast between digets. Day and month are by number and year by letter, X is 52, Y is 53, Z is 54, A is 55 and V was not used. Those are probably year before tractor was actually built.

Brian:
Did you find a serial # on that tractor? That will also be very useful to you if you want to know the exact year of your A. When you find it, then look to the left column of this site to find your serial # & year.
Good luck!

Jeff

Hi Brian, The difference between the Farmall A and the Super A is the Super A has the Touch Control hydraulic lift. You should have three rockshaft power arms for raising your implements. I restored an A and it didn't have hydraulics. Some of the A's had an exhaust lift.
The controls for the Touch Control are mounted to the left of the steering column. Hal
