I have a 42 M, with a wide front end. I am not sure it is an IHC front end. I suspect it is either Swartz or off a 400. Anyway, i broke the right spindle. There is a number i can not read near the bottom of the spindle. I can not find any other numbers on the front end. There is a number on the cast-iron-center wheel 8782-DF, but Im not sure what will do. There is also 2 threaded holes on the inside flange on the bottom of each spindle. Anyone have picks or can tell me how to identify the front end. Where should I look for parts?

Hard to tell over the phone, but sounds like you are dealing with an authentic IH front end with the tie rods out front.

Those flat pads at the inside of the bottom of the spindles with two bolt holes in each. Aftermarket versions didn't have 'em, IH did.

That's as far as I can go, sure hope I'm right. :>)

So, Allen, what are those two bolt holes on the spindle sleeves used for? I've never seen anything attached there - were sugar beet harvesters attached there? Thanks Dick Davis

Mornin' Dick,

Darned if I know; never remember anything that attached to those spots in our little world.

I just always assumed that there must have been a divider or something that used those bolt holes; maybe a mounted IH underslung bean cutter? I Dunno, as we used a single front during bean harvest.

No, the beet toppers didn't use 'em either, but they must have been put there for some reason in mind.

Could they have been used in an assembly or alignment process during manufacture? Heck if I know.

Best to ya,

Allan

I wonder if some kind of fender was ever mounted there. We need to start a new thread to get the old guys thinking about what used to be! I'd past a picture of the assembly but I have a tough time posting pictures. Dick Davis

Easiest way to tell a factory from aftermarket wide front is that the IH wide front has a cast iron center bolster and a aftermarket has a bolster made of formed and welded steel. The bolster is the center peice that the front end tube pivoits on. Try your IH dealer most can obtain parts for a swartz wide front as well as the factory fronts often at comparable prices to mail order outfits.

The wheel don't mean nothin' cuz Schwartz made their fronts to fit the original IH hubs. you might measure the spindle and go somewhere like Schoup and see if you can match it.
