Problem with touch control

Hi all,

I'm having a problem with the touch control on my 1950 Super A. I use the tractor once per week for mowing and every time I get on it, I seem to have little or no fluid in the resevoir. When I remove the cap to check, I get a hiss of air coming out. I can fill it up and use it for a few hours but then the next time I use it, it's empty again. I can find no evidence of a leak. Where is this fluid going? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sam

Sam, I agree with Peabody, I bet your loosing that fluid through your pump, its going into your timing cover and then to the oil pan. You need to disassemble that pump and install new o-rings. You will also want to inspect that pump shaft, if the spot were that o-ring rides has a groove worn in it you may have to replace that shaft also.

More than likely, a bad drive gear seal in your hydraulic pump is allowing the fluid to run into the oil pan. Check the engine oil level. Is it high? Seal and o rings for the pump are a few dollars at your IH dealer and disassembly and repair of the pump is pretty straight-forward and easy.

Well, looks like you guys were right. I opened the top petcock on the oil pan and sure enough, it was over-full by the amount I added to the resevoir. Even with the crankcase over-full by several quarts, I didn't notice any change in performance.

I will get the new seals this week, but I have 2 further questions: If I run the tractor before fixing the seals, will I burn up the pump due to lack of fluid? And have I damaged the engine by contaminating the oil with Hy-Tran?

Thank you very much for the help.

Sam

Don't run the tractor without oil in the hydraulic system. It will damage the pump.

Hydraulic oil is not very good engine oil but it is unlikely to have done any damage. I would not do any hard work with it before changing the engine oil.
