We have a '52 M that has not run in 5 years. Recently we found that the engine is locked up. Any suggestions on how to get the engine unlocked? It has just been repainted with fresh decals, and the tin is straight. What is an "as is" value.

if the engine is stuck than just oil in each of the cyclinders and leave for about a day. Than put the tractor in gear and rock it back and forth. if that does not work than just try tapping the pistons with a hammer than try rocking it back and forth. As for the value, yesterday i bought a 48 farmall m for 700 and it does not run but did about a year ago. It has a loader and has good sheet metal. So about $500 hope you get it running

Well I went underneith my 1949 Farmall H and used a pipewrench, just behind the Clutch you will see a shaft, put your pipe wrench on their and pull. if it ain't seized too bad it should come lose, make sure you have motor oil in the heads before attemting this and watch you face for the pipe wrench handle..LOL LOts of Luck:

please don't laugh but when i was younger a neighbor down the road always got things unstuck by pouring water in them, he unstuck a motor in an old case he said that if water stuck it water will unstick it, personally i used paint thinner and let it set and some nieghbors have used clr to get the rust out and it works pretty well, the main thing is just be patient and don't get the sledge out.

about 20 years ago, I pulled a model A ford doodlebug out of the brush, where it had sat for about 20 years. The engine was stuck, the transmission was stuck, and some of the brakes were stuck. I poured kerosene in the spark plug holes, and the transmission, and let it sit for a few weeks. Then each day, I would stand on the crank to see if it would turn. After about a week of this, it turned. The transmission was stuck tighter, and a sledge hammer was needed to get the sliding gears to slide. I got it running, and it has been running each summer for the last 20 years.

Let me qualify my qualifications. I have only un-stuck one tractor. It was a four cylinder Farmall. I removed the plugs, poured three ounces of brake fluid in each cylinder and waited just two days. It came loose with the crank. My old neighbor down the path says, "If sumpin is stuck, you need alkyhol".

Like I told Red on his "problem", I've heard that the best thing for this is Coca cola. Its acidic, and it should eat the rust, or whatever out from around the pistons. Its also thinner than most oils and should flow into the small tight areas better than oil. I just may try this on my Regular before too long. If I did put it in I would check it every day, and as soon as the motor came free I would rinse the cola out as soon as possible.

Don't know what it's worth at the moment, but it will obviously be worth more if it's un-stuck. It will also be worth a lot less if you get in a hurry with the process!
As Red said, fill the cylinders with lubricant, and WAIT a while. If you can safely block the tractor, jack up one rear tire, put it in 5th gear, and make an effort to turn the tire both ways every day or so. Eventually, it will move.

Well I just unlocked a GM engine on my (SHHHH) JD 4400 combine which had not run in 6 years. I bet it is not locked that hard unless you had it out in the weather. I would fill the cylinders with Marvel Mystery Oil, stick the plugs back in and let her set 2 weeks before you try to turn it. I unlocked the GM engine with a 36 inch pipe wrench on the belt pulley with a 5 foot pipe on it. Broke fairly easy. Soon as it budged, we pulled the 6 spark plugs and shot WD 40 in each cylinder and turned it several revolutions. She loosened up nicely.

Red, what ARE you doing? Do my eyes deceive me? Has the long dry spell finally taken it's toll on The Red? Or should it be Reddish? A JD at the Farm, even if it's only a Header(combine), could be the start of more serious problems to come. I personally think it might be directly attributable to the corrupting influence of one 320U. If you find you ever feel the urge to run astray again feel free to contact some of the good people at this hallowed sight for guidance. Just had a thought, most people have 20-20 vision, could explain a lot.Redfan

It was a cold and rainy January auction day when I bought my first tractor, an F-20 with a stuck engine. I was 15 and did my own bidding! Paid my $20 to the banker and slid that pup onto a trailer and took her home. Removed the pan and found the crank journals sitting parallel to the ground. Jacked up the tractor and put a 4x4 under one of the journals, squirted a product called "Z-4" into all the cylinders, then lowered the jack so weight of the tractor front end was on the block. About 4 months later I happened to be in the machine shed and thought the ole girl looked funny! It had unstuck and the rest is history.

Anybody know where I could by a gallon of "Z-4"? I'd give up some of my retirement for a lead ;<)FB

If all else fails remove plugs and dump rubbing alcohol in cyls.
