Hi Guys,

Stumbled across a 986 loaded w/cab, triple hydraulics and the whole schmear. Including 9,000 hours/never been touched.

The tractor came from up north in the cow country and from an original owner. Hardest thing this tractor ever pulled was a hay swather and was used under a loader. The old gal doesn't look too bad.

But, the dealer is asking $10K for it.

This seems a little spendy to me and I think if I wait, I can do better; whadda you guys think?

Thanks for your thoughts,

Allan

Allan, the price isn't too far off for a nice high-houred 986 with a loader (think what a similar JD 4240 would cost). The thing I would worry about on that one is the shift linkage. 86 series had about the worst linkage ever, and the loader is going to make it ten times worse. If you want a big loader tractor, go 26, 56, or 66 series.

Mornin' KB,

I've been kinda snooping around for a plow tractor and really wanted a 966; but they are kinda in short supply around here.

The dealer wants $13,500 for this 986 with the big heavy Dual loader equipped with a bale spear bucket/grapple. When I asked him what he’d take for just the tractor, he said he needed $9900.

I’m just thinking that since it has 9000 hours on it, that I shouldn’t let my hunger over ride my appetite either.

I’m still smarting a little over this last one I bought with a lot of hours on it. Those old ones need a lot of fixin’ to get them back in the field.

At 9000 hours, aren’t we right at the door of needing a motor at the very least? Even though, most of the time, the thing was probably just idling around under that loader?

Also, thanks for the heads up on the shifter; I didn’t know about that little irritant with the 86 series. Was that because of that darned cab design on the 86’s?

Probably should chosen stamp collecting as my “old-age hobby”. :>)

Thanks,

Allan

9000 Hours realy is not much. What year is the tractor ? look it over good and maybe try it out for a couple of days just to see how it works out last tractor WE tryed out (FORD)4 wheel drive broke down one day into use and they wanted 23,000 for it with a loader. sent it back next day if your going to pay that much for something it better last.most dealers fix little things and don"t disclose the big things wrong with it . try it out and work it and see what happens.got a 966 and 826 and hydro 70 for a 70"s tractor there very dependable.
