Got through there ok last year, but man paying for my sins now.

I am going to start haying on about 20 acres next year that looks ok, but I am going to Bush hog it this fall and check it out really well.

Several years ago my neighbor rented some hay ground from a old timer. He was cutting the third round with his New Holland haybine when there was a loud crash. Everything came to a sudden halt. Turns out the owner had cut down an old oak tree in a water way and left a 10 inch tall stump and forgot to mention it. It broke the main frame and put a u bend in the lift pipe. Spent some time in the welding shop but they got it going again. Not sure if he had to pay for the hay.

I've tried to mow telephone poles with a haybine twice. Both were about two inches tall. Got half way through the first and twisted the shaft off coming out of the gearbox. Took a week to get back to mowing. That was ten years ago.

Three years ago hit another one in a new field. Mowed only about two inches into it. Broke the tongue and bent the push arms underneath. Was mowing again in about three hours, and it was 104 deg and six miles from the shop.

The next year my hay hand was mowing that field and he hit the same pole. I swore I had told him about it and he swore I only thought I would tell him. Same damage, 100 deg, had the pickup there and had the tongue back in and mowing in about two hours. Makes the tongue look pretty ragged.

Last year we broke the tongue again on a big root exposed where it had not been before and welded a new piece of tubing into the tongue so it does not look so bad. Even painted it this time.

I keep my fields clean, but was mowing prairie grass on a retired neighbor's place Saturday. He's been clearing some trees in a clump in the middle of the meadow. Since he was a good farmer I took a chance and mowed through some weeds where I knew trees had been a few years back.

Pulled out a rotten stump and a rock came with it. Broke two guards and three sections. My fault. He doesn't care if I mow it, it just seemed like a nice thing to do to help clean up where he was clearing.

It never fails to amaze me how the old timers clearing by hand cleared all the good land and left the rocky poor land uncleared. Now anything anybody around here tries to clear, you find out why it was not cleared 100 years ago.
