Need an IH Wizard !

Okay,

I'm hooking a remote cylinder to my old 686 and everything works great except:

When I plug the hose tip into one of receivers, and pull the lever out to the 'operate' position, it seems as though there is not enough "resistance" somewhere, 'cause the tip will just pop right back out if I barely touch it or the hose.

This is without any pressure on the lines at all. And, I'm sure that I've slid the receiver back in against the stop after I get the tip in.

The other three work just fine and do the "lock in" thing.

What controls that "breakaway" feature anyway? That internal o-ring seems okay (looks good) as does the little "ball-retainer" ring.

Any ideas?

Allan

Allen in NE:

I have found in rebuilding these over the years that most of the levers have been beat around enough that they become bent inside. If this is the case that would explain your symptoms. This is the number 1 problems I have in rebuilding the new style couplers. If the lever turns with any resistance at all while not hooked up that is a tell-tale-sign. Also the snap-rings in the back may be bent. These new style couplers are not fun to rebuild. each one has around 40 o-rings/backup rings. The kit runs in the $60-80 range. One way to get around this and improve your couplers is to install an I.S.O. adapter kit. I don't remember what they cost but I have installed a few and they can't be beat. You basically gut the coupler housing of internal parts and put the I.S.O. couplers back in with new rubber dust caps. The bigggest thing I like, there are no levers.

Things look nice and clean in picture but you can get mud inside those fittings. Try tapping from the tractor side of the fitting to be sure it is pushed all the way out to recieve the male tip. There is one snap ring at the rear which allows you to remove the whole unit in one piece. You can try another unit or switch over to a Pioneer set. IH used to sell a converter kit I assume it is still around. If tapping with the hammer helps make yourself a set of levers to push the body out a little further each time you hook up.

7288,

Yes, that is the first thing I thought of too; tapped the coupler forward from the rear and it is nice and free. Can't see any foreign crap in there at all, other than a little over spray at the outer edge from the paint job.

The tip positions itself deep enough as it should, but just doesn't wanna stay in there. It seems as all is well until I throw that lever, then it just wants to jump right back out again if I move that hose at all. I always tug on 'em a little before I start the tractor to make sure that they are seated properly.

It is kind of like when you hook one up that has pressure against the cylinder and it can't unseat the ball.

I'm guessing a bad coupler too. Darned tractors! :>)

Thanks for your help,

Allan

Allan, are you use ends that match IH plug ins male and female have points, many plug ins have balls and I think there are two sizes of balls. IH says the points and balls will not work togather. I have used them that way and not had trouble, then I had something ,I don"t remember what, that the two would not work togather. Just something to check.

Hi Jimmy,

These are those old, fat, squared ended ball type.

They work fine on this set of ports; lever pops out at full extension and also pops back when it is fully retracted.

But, when I try to use that set over on the other side, the top one won't even stay in the receiver if I jiggle it any at all. Even with the tractor not even running. Just doesn't seem to "catch".

The bottom one stays in fine.

Thanks

Allan

I've got a 666 with the same hydro system. One thing to check is that the cut-off levers are straight back when you are hooking up: had some strange problems when they are cocked slightly up or down.

Have you tried using pioneer couplers? They have sharp edges that hold a little better than IH male couplers.
If you're using new male couplers, then you may just have a worn out female coupler. I think they are rebuildable, but it's not an easy job. New coupler block might be the answer.

Hey Pard!

Thanks. I've just about come to that conclusion too.

The one that is giving me fits is on the right side and I would guess that this is the set that has gotten the most use over the years.

I'll go talk to my "Red Mech", but I'll bet the coupler is bad, just as you do.

Thanks again,

Allan

Two questions and my guess. Does any tip pop out of that socket ? Will the offending tip stay in another reciever ? If so, you might have a bad coupler.

Greg

Hi RB,

Yes, it is not the tips; they are new and any other combination of tip/receiver ports works okay.

It is just this one receiver; no tip will stay in the darned thing.....The coupling mechanism (whatever that is?) is not serviceable?

Thanks,

Allan

If I had a tractor that was that new, I'd know if they were rebuildable. By the looks of it, you need to bring that tractor over here and put it to work. ;^)

We were over your way in early July and got caught in one heck of a hail storm.

Greg

RB,

New? Naw, she is 24 years old!

Yeah, we are really lucky; we don't have to look for the hail, it finds us. That particular hail you are talking about was a beaut, but it only took out the wheat that had escaped the draught; the rest of the crops came out of it. Now if they can just beat the killer frost.

It was three of these sweet little hailstorms, three years running, that successfully removed me from the farming business in the early eighties and left 5" holes in my metal equipment shed roof.

And so it goes,

Allan

Like I said, New. It's only been around for 24 years.

Storms like that would take the shine off farming pretty quick. We are getting rain today also, but I don't think that it has anything to do with the hurricanes. This weather seems to be coming in from the pacific.
