Here's a pretty good shot of an original IH wide front with the radius arms. Wonder if the little wedges are inside the frame rails as they should be?

While we are on the subject...can someone tell me what WFE will fit a 300 rowcrop? Im thinking H thru 350? On the other hand, the one in that photo doesnt look like it would.
What are the pros and cons of Swartz versus IH front ends? other than Swartz isnt IH.
Finally, does anyone have a used one for sale?

What wedges are you referring to? I have the same tractor as in your picture.

Brian,

The frame rails are made from ordinary box iron. If you look at the top and bottom of the box iron, it is thinner on it's inside tractor side than on it is on the outside tractor side where it meets the vertical portion of the box. (I know this sounds like mud)

Try it again: Due to the method of construction of the box rails, when you put that rearward bolt down thru the frame rail to secure the radius arm, the bolt wants to point outwards away from the tractor because the “inside edge to outside wall’ of the lower frame rail is built "angled". (Upper and lower, actually)

To get that bolt to point straight down and to be able to anchor it securely, IH used a little angled "washer" or "spacer" under the head of the bolt inside the box rail. This spacer compensated for the box iron’s built-in angle.

If this spacer is not installed, the bolt only touches the box rail on one side of it's head because the radius arm is holding it in a vertically straight manner.

Any of this make any sense?

Allan

Yep Allen, that makes sense to me....I will have to check my tractor out tonight to see if they are there and if not get em put back! Thanks for your patience and thorough explanation.

When I first read this post I didn't know what you were talking about. Now I do. You explained it very well, and I can understand how those wedges are very important.

Hey I have a wide front end like that! Only problem is, mine was "re_engineered". Someone put the axle pivot in the forward position, and then placed the axle behind the pivot. To make this work they had to cut the knuckle arm and reweld on backwards. The shade tree redesign caused the axle to pivot up into the braces when driving over irregularities (dips and bumps), causing them to bend. This placed tension on the braces which caused both C channels to break. Next they welded the C channels with reinforcing plates. This caused the distance and alignment to be incorrect between the back of the tractor and the front. All of this causes the edge of the hood to cut into both the grill and the gas tank (sigh).
Any good ideas as to where to find: those bevel washers, a non butchered steering knuckle arm, and the adaptor plate? I think I can straighten out the rest.

Dave

Were wide front ends rare or something?

FM,

No, they weren't rare at all.

I just posted this picture up because some of guys were having a little trouble telling the difference between the original and the aftermarket versions.

Have a good one,

Allan

My cousin has a Farmall M with a wide front that he says is rare. Is he lying or are some rare?

Depends on where you are I think. In potato country they aren't rare at all. In Maine most Farmalls are wide front. My family had 3 an H, M and Super M that I still have, all are wide front.
I'd guess that in corn country it'd be the other way.
